Family Folder takes only a few minutes to set up. By the end of these steps you will have an account, a folder, a document, and at least one family member who can access your shared files. No credit card is needed to get started.Documentation Index

Create your account
Go to familyfolder.com/auth and select the Sign up tab.Fill in your name, email address, and a password of at least eight characters. Check the box to accept the Terms & Conditions, then click Create account.After you submit the form, Family Folder sends a confirmation email to the address you provided. Open that email and click the confirmation link to activate your account. Once confirmed, return to the sign-in page and sign in with your email and password (or Google).
If the confirmation email does not arrive within a few minutes, check your spam folder. You can also switch to the Sign up tab and click Resend confirmation email.
Create your first folder
After signing in you land on the Family Folder home screen. In the left sidebar, click My Family Folder.Click the New folder button — it appears near the top right of the content area. Give your folder a name (for example, “Passports & IDs” or “The House”) and click Create folder.Your new folder is private by default. You can share it with family members later once they have joined your family group.
Upload a document
Open the folder you just created by clicking its name.Click the Upload button (or drag a file from your computer directly onto the folder). A file picker opens — select the file you want to add and confirm. Family Folder supports PDFs, images, Word documents, and most common file formats.Once the upload completes the file appears inside your folder. Click the file name to preview it, or select the three-dot menu next to it to rename, move, or delete it.
On mobile, you can also take a photo of a physical document directly from the upload dialog — look for the camera option in your browser’s file picker.
Invite a family member
To invite someone to your family group, open the account menu in the top right corner (your initials) and select Family settings.On the Family settings page, find the Members section and click Invite member. Enter their email address and click Send invite. They will receive an email with a link to join.Once they accept the invite and create their account, they appear in your family members list. You can then share any folder with them by opening the folder, clicking the Share button, and selecting their name and role (Contributor or Viewer).
What to do next
Now that your account is set up, here are a few things worth exploring:- Search — use the search bar at the top of any screen to find files instantly across all your folders.
- Ask AI — open any document and click Ask AI to get a summary, key dates, and action items.
- Roles — when sharing a folder, give partners Contributor access and children Viewer access so everyone has the right level of control.
- Starred files — star any file to pin it to your Starred view for quick access.
