Folders are the building blocks of Family Folder. You can create as many as you need, nest them up to three levels deep, and customise each one with a colour and icon so it’s easy to spot at a glance. Every folder you create starts completely private — only you can see it until you deliberately share it with another family member.Documentation Index

Creating a folder
Open the new folder dialog
From any view in Family Folder, click the New folder button in the sidebar or the main content area.
Name your folder
Type a name for the folder. Folder names can be up to 60 characters. If you’re creating a subfolder, you’ll see a breadcrumb showing where it will be placed.
Choose an appearance
Pick a colour and, optionally, an icon for the folder. This makes it easier to find at a glance when you have many folders.
Decide on sharing
By default the Shared folder toggle is off, meaning only you can see the folder. Toggle it on to share the folder with one or more family members (see Sharing a folder below).
Every folder you create is private by default. It is visible only to you until you turn on sharing and select family members. This is intentional — sharing is always a deliberate choice, never the default.
Sharing a folder
When you turn on the Shared folder toggle, a list of your family members appears. For each person you add, you choose a role:| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Contributor | View, add, and delete files in the folder |
| Viewer | View files only — cannot add or delete |
Sharing is limited to people already in your family. There are no public links and no way to share with someone outside your family.
Nesting folders
You can create subfolders inside any existing folder, up to three levels deep. To create a subfolder, right-click (or long-press on mobile) an existing folder in the sidebar and choose New folder, or open the folder first and use the New folder button inside it.What happens when I reach the nesting limit?
What happens when I reach the nesting limit?
Family Folder allows up to 3 levels of folder nesting. If you try to create a folder inside one that is already at the maximum depth, a message will tell you the nesting limit has been reached for that branch. You can still create folders elsewhere in the hierarchy.
Starring folders
Star any folder to pin it to the top of your sidebar for quick access. Click the star icon that appears when you hover over a folder name, or use the context menu.Deleting and restoring folders
Deleting a folder moves it to the Bin. It does not disappear immediately — you can restore it any time while it is in the Bin.Delete a folder
Right-click the folder in the sidebar (or use its context menu) and choose Delete. The folder moves to the Bin along with all of its files.
Restore from the Bin
Go to Bin in the sidebar. Find the folder, then click Restore. The folder and its contents return to their original location.
